What’s the Difference Between Domain Name and Web Hosting

Web hosting and domain hosting, although related, are two different services.

Web hosts provide storage space for website content and access to websites.

Domain hosts provide domain names that allow website visitors to access the content of a website.

  • A domain name is your website’s address on the internet. It identifies the website and lets people find it in their web browser.
  • Web hosting is the place where your website data are stored, and from where the website can be accessed by your website visitors.

What’s a domain?

When a visitor types your domain name into a web browser, that domain name is decrypted to understand which specific web host it points to. After completion, the website is displayed to the visitor.

Your domain can be used for both an email address or website. You can register a domain and NOT use it for a website or an e-mail address, BUT without a domain name, you can’t have a website or e-mail account.

When used for a website, the domain name is what people type in their browser to find your website. For this reason, they are sometimes referred to as web addresses.

However, registering a domain does not automatically create a website, it simply means that you have registered the domain.

What’s a website host?

Website hosts are companies that host, deploy, and manage files for one or more websites. A website hosting company as a mall that contains several individual stores.

If you want to open a shop in the mall, you can rent the room and open a shop. Just like a mall, web hosting companies can rent space on their web servers, where they can store files on your website and make them accessible to visitors. Since you have registered your domain, you can use it in any web hosting company.
